The U.S. President issues an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on Indian products in addition to the 25% declared on July 31; one portion starts on August 7, while the remainder follows after 21 days; MEA calls it ‘extremely unfortunate.’

On Wednesday (August 6, 2025), U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order that imposes a 25% tariff on imports from India, reacting to India's “directly or indirectly” importing oil from Russia. This is in addition to the 25% tariff on imports from India that Mr. Trump authorized on July 31.

The initial 25% tariff will start on Thursday (August 7, 2025), while the extra 25% tariff will take effect 21 days later.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) addressed these recent occurrences, stating it has expressed its position — in a previous statement after Mr. Trump's warning of further tariffs — that these measures were “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable”. The MEA stated that it was "highly regrettable" the U.S. decided on this approach.

'Sanction' for Russian oil imports

"To address the national emergency outlined in Executive Order 14066 [concerning Russia’s activities in Ukraine], I conclude that it is essential and suitable to levy an extra ad valorem duty on imports of goods from India that are directly or indirectly bringing in oil from the Russian Federation," stated Mr. Trump’s executive order
