
For most of history, reaching orbit was something only nations did — big agencies, big budgets, decades of state machinery. On 18 July 2026, an Indian start-up changed that story. At 12:05:30 PM, a rocket built by Skyroot Aerospace lifted off from Sriharikota, climbed through the sky, and placed its satellites in orbit — making it the first private company to launch to orbit from Indian soil, and on its very first attempt.

The rocket: Vikram-1
Vikram-1 is named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India's space programme — and in a lovely touch, its major systems honour Indian scientific legends too:
First stage — KALAM-1200 solid motor (named for Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam), cast and tested at SDSC
Second stage solid motor, validated at the SDSC static test facility
Upper stage — RAMAN-1 liquid engine (echoing Sir C.V. Raman), tested at ISRO's LPSC facility
Three solid stages give the punch to climb out of the atmosphere; the liquid upper stage provides the fine control to place satellites precisely into orbit.
What it carried
Vikram-1 delivered two satellites — SCOPE and Grahaa — into Low Earth Orbit, along with additional payloads running in-orbit experiments on the upper stage. Exactly the kind of small-satellite payload the global commercial launch market is hungry for.
Why this is historic
Three years ago, Skyroot made India's first private rocket flight — the sub-orbital Vikram-S, launched on 18 November 2022. That was a proof of concept. Reaching orbit is a different order of difficulty entirely — and doing it first time is rare anywhere in the world.
None of it would have been possible without a policy shift. The Government of India's 2020 space-sector reforms opened the door for private players to build and launch rockets, ending an era when spaceflight from India meant ISRO alone. Vikram-1 is the clearest proof yet that those reforms are working.
A public-private partnership done right
This wasn't a start-up going it alone — it was a model for how a national space agency can lift its private sector:
ISRO provided access to its solid-motor casting and static-test facilities, and its safety team gave 24/7 monitoring through operations
IN-SPACe — the government's single-window space regulator — handled regulatory approval and offered technical consultancy
State infrastructure, start-up speed. That combination is exactly what India is betting on.
