India's Infant Mortality Rate Reaches Record Low of 25, Reduced by 80% Since 1971; Kerala was the sole state among the 21 large ones with a single-digit IMR of 5. It ranks second in the nation following Manipur.

The infant mortality rate (IMR) in the nation has reached an unprecedented low of 25, representing a significant decline of 37.5 per cent from 40 in 2013, as per the Sample Registration System report for 2023 released by the Registrar General of India.

IMR is an essential public health metric defined as the count of child deaths per 1,000 live births before one year old -- a lower figure indicates superior health accessibility.

Per the SRS 2023 report, which analyzed data for 2023, IMR has experienced a significant 80 percent drop from 129 in 1971. Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh indicated the highest IMR rates in the nation at 37. Manipur had the lowest score at 3.

Kerala was the only one among the 21 large states that reported an IMR of just 5. It ranks second in the nation following Manipur.

The report indicates a nationwide reduction of IMR from 44 to 28 in rural regions. In the country's urban regions, the figures decreased from 27 to 18. This represents ten-year declines of approximately 36 percent and 33 percent accordingly.

The report additionally emphasizes the decrease in both birth rates and death rates within the nation.

The birth rate is a straightforward indicator of a population's fertility and is a vital factor in determining population growth. It provides the count of live births for every thousand people in a specific area and year.

"The birth rate across all of India has significantly dropped over the past fifty years, falling from 36.9 in 1971 to 18.4 in 2023." The gap between rural and urban areas has also decreased during these years. "Nonetheless, the Birth Rate has remained greater in rural regions than in urban regions over the past fifty years," it stated.

The report indicated that the birth rate has dropped by roughly 14 percent over the past ten years, decreasing from 21.4 in 2013 to 18.4 in 2023, while rural regions experienced a reduction from 22.9 to 20.3 (approximately 11 percent decline). In urban regions, it ranges from 17.3 to 14.9 (a decline of approximately 14 percent).

In 2023, Bihar recorded the highest birth rate at 25.8, while Andaman and Nicobar Islands had the lowest at 10.1.

The mortality rate has steadily decreased over the past fifty years from 14.9 in 1971 to 6.4 in 2023.

In countryside regions, it fell from 7.2 in 2022 to 6.8 in 2023. In metropolitan regions, it decreased from 6.0 in 2022 to 5.7 in 2023.

The report indicated that Chandigarh had the lowest death rate at 4, while Chhattisgarh had the highest at 8.3.
