Kids enjoy snacking frequently. They frequently link snacks with happiness. However, frequently, the favored snack choices are predominantly unhealthy, packed with excessive levels of sodium, sugar, unhealthy fats, and preservatives. Childhood is a developmental stage, and these unhealthy foods can impact their well-being and interfere with their growth. The answer is to discover a substitute for their preferred snacks.
Dr. Srishti Goyal, a dietitian consultant at Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, informed HT Lifestyle that junk food leads to various health issues in children, including weight gain, obesity, and diabetes.
Before exploring healthy snacking choices, it's important to understand the reasons behind children's frequent snacking. Is it due to boredom, or is there another strong reason that they can't resist? It appears there is a genuine biological reason, and it leans more towards a necessity than a desire. The dietician stated that their increased energy requirements lead them to desire food more frequently.
Choose fresh fruits over candy.
1. Fruits such as apples, bananas, and oranges inherently fulfill a craving for sweetness while offering fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants. Slicing them into playful shapes or presenting them as fruit salads can enhance their attractiveness.
2. Nuts and seeds rather than chips
Almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds are crunchy, satisfying, and high in protein and healthy fats.
For young children, provide nuts in safe forms (such as powdered or soaked) to reduce choking hazards.
3. Homemade popcorn rather than store-bought snacks
Air-popped popcorn, gently flavored with herbs, is a whole-grain treat that is much healthier than store-bought chips or fried snacks.
4. Yogurt with toppings rather than ice cream
Plain yogurt with fresh fruit, honey, or granola serves as a tasty, calcium-packed snack that boosts bone health
Whole Grain Sandwiches
A tiny sandwich crafted from whole-grain bread, veggies, and a protein source such as egg, paneer, or hummus can be flavorful and healthy
