Employers are placing more value on what you can do (skills) rather than just what degree you hold. For ages, job recruiters have relied on degrees and merits to hire. But as the digitalization has increased, there have been criteria changes in the hiring process. It's no more just a degree that gets employees the job; the focus has shifted more on the skills that they offer.

A few of the factors are that the demands of the industry are changing in comparison to academia. Technology, specifically in fields like AI, data science & digital marketing. Employers are now prioritizing practical expertise over theoretical knowledge. The evolving at a pace far quicker than academic curricula.

The ecosystem of start-ups and the gig economy: India’s vibrant startup ecosystem and expanding gig economy thrive on agility and hands-on ability. Startups value individuals who can deliver immediate results rather than those with just prestigious degrees.

Let's focus on government and corporate initiatives. The government has issued the Skill India Mission, industry-led certifications, vocational training schemes, and strengthening of the ecosystem for skills-first employment. Large corporates too have begun to integrate skill.

Digital Transformation and Remote Work
The rise of remote and hybrid work models demands employees who can self-manage, adapt, and apply technical skills without constant supervision. Recruiters are increasingly using skill-based assessments, coding challenges, and project portfolios to evaluate candidates.

To conclude, it's better to focus on skills that you can acquire as a job seeker, as market trends of skill requirements correlate with job requirements more than merit.
