India's Asia Cup 2025 team revealed: Suryakumar Yadav will captain the squad, with Shubman Gill appointed as his vice-captain.
The BCCI men's selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, put an end to all uncertainties by including Shubman Gill in India's team for the Asia Cup 2025. Gill, who was absent from India's last three bilateral T20Is against Bangladesh, South Africa, and England, made his return thanks to an impressive performance as both captain and batsman in the five-match Test series in England. Gill achieved a remarkable total of 754 runs with an average of 75. The 25-year-old has been appointed as the vice-captain of the squad that will be headed by Suryakumar Yadav.
Gill's most recent T20I was in July 2024, where he served as the vice captain for the team in the series against Sri Lanka. A point that was consistently remarked upon by both Suryakumar and chief selector Ajit Agarkar during the press conference on Tuesday. Prior to that, he captained India for the inaugural time in a T20I series in Zimbabwe. Since Gill was a key player in both the ODI and Test teams, the selectors chose to exclude him from the shorter formats. When a major event like the Asia Cup arrives, there was never going to be uncertainty about Gill's position.
The debate was triggered by the performance of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson as an opening duo during Gill's absence. Abhishek and Sanju both achieved a pair of centuries each, effectively solidifying their spots in the T20I XI. The selectors, nonetheless, have chosen to rely on Gill's talent
