Numerous villages were flattened, homes were demolished, and rescue teams hurried to distant regions vulnerable to the tremors for recovery efforts.

The earthquake registered a magnitude of 6.3 and hit 27 kilometers east-northeast of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province. As reported by the AP news agency, the earthquakes occurred at 11:47 pm on Sunday and were located only eight kilometres deep, which can lead to more destruction as shallower quakes tend to be more harmful.

According to interior ministry spokesperson Abdul Matin Qani, Kunar saw 800 fatalities and 1,300 injuries. Additionally, numerous homes were demolished and three villages were leveled in the Kunar province.

The United States Geological Survey reports that approximately 2,71,900 people lived in the region affected by the earthquake. The agency predicted there will be at least one aftershock in the coming week.

“Rescue efforts are still ongoing in that area, and numerous villages have been entirely devastated.” The numbers of martyrs and injured individuals are fluctuating. "Medical teams from Kunar, Nangarhar, and the capital Kabul have reached the location,” stated Sharafat Zaman, a spokesperson for the public health ministry.

As reported by Reuters, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km in certain areas, causing the destruction of houses constructed from mud and stone. Rescue teams hurried to search for victims in a village situated near the area adjacent to Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The spokesperson for Afghanistan's foreign office stated that no foreign governments have intervened to assist with rescue and relief efforts so far.
