Pokwang’s ‘2 Valid IDs’ Builds Box-Office Momentum and Heads to Hawaii Film Festival
Manila
Award-winning Filipino drama “2 Valid IDs” is extending its strong Cinemalaya run into commercial theaters and the international festival circuit. The film, starring Marietta “Pokwang” Subong, opened nationwide on October 14, 2026 after winning three major honors at the 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival.
Early reports said it was nearing ₱15 million at the box office, but those figures were based on unofficial estimates rather than an audited distributor total. Independent tracker Takilya estimated the film at ₱13.1 million in its first seven days, and by October 24 placed its cumulative Philippine gross at approximately ₱32.4 million, reflecting continued audience interest beyond its opening week.
Directed by Ma-an L. Asuncion-Dagñalan and written by Abet Pagdagdagan Raz, 2 Valid IDs follows Sylvia, a poor farmer trying to claim money sent for her gravely ill husband’s medical treatment. The problem is deceptively simple: she is required to present two valid IDs but does not even have one. As she turns to a fixer and moves through long lines, added expenses, hunger, and bureaucracy, the film turns an everyday administrative requirement into a larger story about poverty, identity, and access to public and financial systems. At Cinemalaya 2026, Subong shared the Best Actress award with Ruby Ruiz of Status: Rejected, while 2 Valid IDs also won the Special Jury Award and Audience Choice Award for Full-Length Film.
The film is also officially part of the Hawai‘i International Film Festival 2026, where it is presented as an International Premiere under the festival’s Southeast Asian Showcase. HIFF currently lists additional screenings on October 27 at Consolidated Theatres Kahala in Honolulu and November 5 at Consolidated Theatres Kapolei. The international selection gives the film a new audience beyond its Philippine theatrical run while keeping its focus on an issue that is deeply familiar to many Filipinos: proving one’s identity in systems where documentation can determine access to money, health care, and other basic needs.
