Osaka’s Famous Glico Running Man Is Getting a New Look in 2027
Manila
One of Osaka’s most recognizable photo spots is about to change. Ezaki Glico will retire the current sixth-generation Dotonbori Glico Sign at the end of November 2026, ending its 12-year run above the Dotonbori canal.
The existing version was unveiled in October 2014 and became the first Glico sign to use an LED display, incorporating roughly 140,000 LED chips across the landmark. Visitors can still see the familiar runner through November 30, after which renovation work will begin in December.
The Glico sign has been part of Osaka’s cityscape since 1935, with successive redesigns keeping the runner at the center of the display. The runner itself dates back even further: Glico says the symbol was created in 1920 to represent founder Riichi Ezaki’s philosophy of promoting health through food. The upcoming seventh-generation sign will keep that famous arms-raised running pose, but Glico says it will introduce newer LED technology. Reports also say the upgrade is intended to improve energy efficiency and address the aging LED system and increasingly difficult-to-source replacement components used in the current sign.
For now, Glico is keeping the actual design of the new sign under wraps. The seventh-generation Dotonbori Glico Sign is scheduled to debut in spring 2027, with reports placing the unveiling around late March to early April. That means travelers visiting Osaka after November 30 may find the familiar landmark covered or undergoing construction for several months. If the current version is part of your Osaka photo list, the next few weeks are the final chance to see its 2014-era LED design before the Running Man gets his next makeover.
