Negros' Local Artisans Take the Spotlight as Traditional Filipino Crafts Return to the Market
Dumaguete City
Filipino craftsmanship is gaining renewed attention as government agencies and local entrepreneurs work together to strengthen the country's traditional fiber and weaving industry. On October 16, 2026, the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Science and Technology in the Negros Island Region highlighted opportunities for local producers during the opening of the 2026 Buglasan Trade Fair in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. The exhibition returned after a nine-year hiatus and brought together 25 local producers showcasing crafts, home and lifestyle products, and woven textiles. Featured materials include abaca, coconut coir, piña fiber from pineapple leaves, sinamay, and cotton. These natural resources demonstrate how traditional Filipino skills can be transformed into useful and attractive products for modern consumers.
The initiative is also important for small businesses seeking more customers and better access to wider markets. According to the Philippine News Agency, DTI officials emphasized the need to help micro, small, and medium enterprises improve product quality, strengthen competitiveness, and expand their reach. Meanwhile, DOST-NIR announced plans for the Philippine Textile Research Institute to establish a regional yarn production and innovation center and a national textile fiber innovation hub in Negros Occidental. The proposed facilities could allow locally sourced cotton, abaca, and other natural fibers to be processed into yarn within the region instead of transporting raw materials to the institute's facilities in Manila. Better access to locally processed materials could benefit handloom weavers and other producers while creating opportunities to explore natural alternatives to synthetic fibers.
For consumers, supporting local craftsmanship can begin with simple choices. When shopping for home decorations, bags, woven accessories, gifts, or textiles, buyers can look for Filipino-made products and ask sellers about the materials and techniques used. Purchasing directly from local producers, when possible, may also help small enterprises build customer relationships and receive greater visibility. Entrepreneurs can benefit by presenting clear product photographs, explaining the stories behind their creations, maintaining consistent quality, and using online platforms to reach customers beyond their immediate communities. However, shoppers should compare prices, check product details, and choose items that suit their needs rather than purchasing solely because something is locally made. The Buglasan Trade Fair offers visitors an opportunity to explore the creativity of Negros-based producers and learn more about the region's traditional industries.
