Super Typhoon Rosal Nears Batanes as Authorities Warn of Dangerous Winds and Seas
Quezon City
Super Typhoon Rosal, internationally known as Champi, remains a major weather concern for the Philippines on October 22, 2026. PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin placed the storm approximately 495 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes, moving northwestward at 20 kilometers per hour. It reported maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour near the center, with gusts reaching 240 kilometers per hour. Although the cyclone was forecast to gradually weaken, its powerful winds and surrounding weather conditions continued to pose risks to communities in Northern Luzon.
Batanes was under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 in the morning bulletin, with parts of the Babuyan Islands also under warnings. PAGASA cautioned that heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous coastal conditions could affect areas beyond the storm's projected path. Gale warnings were also in effect for northern and eastern coastal areas of Luzon. These conditions can disrupt fishing, sea travel, transportation, and daily activities, especially in exposed coastal communities.
Residents should monitor updated PAGASA bulletins and follow instructions from their local disaster risk reduction offices. Families can charge phones, prepare drinking water and essential medicines, secure loose outdoor objects, and keep important documents protected. Small fishing boats should not venture into dangerous waters, and people should avoid crossing flooded roads. The storm's track and intensity can change, so the latest official advisory should guide decisions rather than older social media posts.
